New York -- A court here sentenced a Lebanese-born Swede to life imprisonment Tuesday for trying to set up a militant training camp for the Al-Qaeda network in the United States.
Ossama Kassir, 43, was found guilty in May of trying to open a jihadist training camp in northwest Oregon in 1999, which aimed to prepare young Muslims to fight in Afghanistan, then under Taliban rule.
Prosecutors said Kassir had moved to the United States in 1999 and stayed for a year on a ranch in Oregon, before returning to Europe. He was also found guilty of running several Internet sites on how to handle weapons.
He was extradited in 2007 to the United States from the Czech Republic where he had been held since 2005.
Prosecutors also accused him of being a supporter of the radical Muslim Egyptian cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, serving a seven-year jail term in Britain for inciting followers to murder non-believers.
